MSU History Faculty to discuss elections and stability of South Caucasus

 by Vestnik KavkazaThe History Faculty of the Moscow State University of M.V. Lomonosov will host a science conference entitled “South Caucasus: New Political Realities. Economy, Security, Humanitarian Field” on April 4, 2013. The North-South Center for Political Analysis and Vestnik Kavkaza support the conference. Attendants of the talks will discuss tendencies and prospects of South Caucasus in the light of economic, political and social processes.

Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline to be extended

 The power of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (or the South Caucasus Pipeline, SCP) will be increased to 25 billion cubic meters of gas, rising to 45 billion cubic meters in the future. This was announced by the Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev. According to him, Azerbaijan and Georgia intend to implement a project to increase the capacity of the BTE gas pipeline, as well as several previously-implemented projects of global significance.

 Experts have concluded their work and Azerbaijan waiting for a Georgian invitation for further negotiations of border delimitation, Chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Land and Cartography Garib Mamedov has said today.Azerbaijan and Georgia have settled over 300 out of 480 km of borders. The border issue will determine control over the David Gareja Monastery.

 BP Azerbaijan President Rashid Javanshir has been replaced by Gordon Birrell. Javanshir has become the BP Vice President in London for strategy and integration.Javanshir was the first Azerbaijani citizen to become the BP Azerbaijan President. He was in charge of operations in Azerbaijan and Georgia and exports to Turkey.Birrell used to be the head of the Shah Deniz project. He will enter office as the president on November 15.

Hungary wants to receive gas from Azerbaijan and Georgia

 Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban said that Hungary wanted to import gas from Azerbaijan and Georgia, RBC reports.He noted that Nabucco was not interested in Hungary. The PM believes that the country cannot rely on renewable energy, except geothermal sources. 85% of Hungarian population uses gas for heating purchased in Russia. Gas will soon arrive from Slovakia from the northern part of Europe. The pipeline will be launched in late 2013. Gas is also available in Romania. 

6 people injured by earthquake in Azerbaijan

 Nurseries were closed after an earthquake at the Zagatalsky District of Azerbaijan, as stated by Elman Ramazanov, chairman of the district commission for emergencies and head of the district’s executives, Trend reports.Two middle schools were damaged, studies at 5 schools were limited.. 15 private houses were damaged in 15 villages.6 people were injured in the Balakentsky District of Azerbaijan. 30 people requested medical aid, as stated by Azad Balayev, chairman of the commission for emergencies of the district.

Terrorist attack halts Azerbaijani gas supply to Turkey

 The terrorist blast at the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Pipeline halted Azerbaijani gas supply to Turkey, Trend reports.Gas pumping will be restored in 7-10 days.The blast happened at the Sarikamis District of Turkey’s Kars Province. Botas requested BP Azerbaijan to stop gas pumping on Thursday. Gas supplies from Shah Deniz to Azerbaijan and Georgia and to pumping stations of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline continue. The previous blast happened on May 29, 2012.

 Azerbaijan has temporarily halted gas supplies from Shah Deniz to Turkey, Interfax reports.Turkey’s Botas requested Azerbaijan to stop gas pumping at night. Gas supplies to Azerbaijan and Georgia using the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Pipeline and oil supplies to pumping stations of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline continue.
